Nickel Pro (2008 – 2016)
A short history and formal farewell
Who we were
Nickel Pro launched in 2008 as a Nairobi-based web-development studio focused on “pain-free” WordPress theming, custom PHP work and SEO for Kenyan businesses. At our peak we kept a handful of full-time staff and a rotating bench of freelance designers, serving clients from micro-enterprises to regional NGOs.
Co-founder Kelvin Jayanoris introduced the outfit to the wider community at WordCamp Kenya 2012, showcasing rapid plugin development and championing local open-source skills.
Highlights
- DukaPress – an open-source e-commerce plugin that filled Kenya’s “small shop” niche; thousands of sites once ran on it.
- Jibu Pro & utility plugins – lightweight Q&A and form tools that circulated on Kenyan tech blogs and GitHub forks.
- Community advocacy – WordCamp talks, blog tutorials and internship schemes that helped seed a generation of local WordPress developers.
Why we shut down
By late 2016 the founders pivoted to new ventures and client demand tapered off naturally.
Current status
Nickel Pro is no longer trading, accepting projects or providing plugin support.
Elsewhere
To every client, contributor and WordCamp attendee who championed local open-source development: thank you. Nickel Pro may have closed its books, yet its small imprint on Kenya’s early WordPress scene endures.
