Desmopressin has been used for many years in the treatment of diabetes insipidus, nocturnal enuresis (involuntary urination while asleep) and nocturia associated with multiple sclerosis (in adults aged up to 65 years); it has also been recommended in certain circumstances for the treatment of nocturia in men and women (previously, an unlicensed use). While we labelled the dosage as high, low, and very low in this review, actual bioavailability may be different. Weight, sitting and standing blood pressures, serum electrolytes and osmolality, and urinary electrolytes, creatinine level and osmolality were also recorded. Desmopressin reduces the frequency of nocturia induced by nocturnal polyuria.5However, little is known about the use of desmopressin in elderly women with nocturnal polyuria. Exclusion criteria included nocturnal enuresis or incontinence, significant cardiovascular, renal or hepatic disease, diabetes, UTI or concomitant medication active on the lower urinary tract.Twenty patients (mean age 70.5 years, range 52–80) were entered into the study, which was conducted over 7 consecutive weeks and started with a 1‐week placebo run‐in period to establish baseline voiding values.
